My first career was journalism. Then I worked as a copywriter at ad agencies. Then I did marketing for a start-up. At the end of those 17 years, I realised what I loved most — and what I was best at — was helping companies figure out the cornerstones of their brand. By cornerstones I mean the often fuzzy yet essential ideas that brought the company into existence. Undefined, they are just impulses. But articulated and connected, they’re the operating system of your brand.

I started Bateman’s in 2018 to focus on helping start-ups build stronger brand foundations. Working at a start-up had shown me that brand was too often an afterthought and I wanted to change that. My belief is that your brand is your most important commercial asset after your product.
